5 a Day Keeps Office Stress at Bay

Photo Credit: Nina Matthews Photography via Compfight cc

Everyone knows that we need to eat our 5-a-day to keep ourselves in tip-top condition and that delicious, fresh fruit is the perfect office snack.

But if you're considering ordering an office fruit delivery or if your London office has just started receiving our bountiful, brown boxes then here's where you can find out what amazing things just 5 portions of fruit a day can do for your office.

5 Office Benefits from Eating your 5-a-day

1) Raises Productivity

A piece of fruit provides energy that won't leave employees crashing into fatigue just half an hour later. A banana rather than a chocolate bar or muffin for elevenses will keep everyone energised, alert and less likely to succumb to the mid-afternoon slump when work quality is most likely to drop.

2) Appetite Suppressing

Keeping your employees full of good quality, easy to access calories from fruit not only stops the inevitable hunger and boredom induced wander to the vending machine or corner shop, it also keeps the waist line trim, which brings us on to our next benefit...

3) Boosts the Immune System

Employees that maintain a healthy diet and look after their weight are more likely to take less days off sick, thanks to the amount of illness-fighting vitamins they're absorbing from nutrient-dense fruit. By providing fruit, you're protecting your colleagues from sickness and, especially with winter on its way, you'll be sure to notice less sniffly noses, spluttering and sneezing if everyone is snacking on fruit rather than an unhealthy alternative.

4) Morale Boosting

Everyone loves a freebie and by providing fruit for your employees, you're showing that you care about their health, wellbeing and happiness. And when you feel appreciated and cared about, you're always much more motivated to work hard - especially when you've got a punnet of grapes or berries to see you through till 5pm!

5) Cut Smoking Breaks

Studies have shown that fruit can help people to quit smoking and eating fruit is also an important cancer preventer. So, if you're getting the office involved in Stoptober, be sure to provide them with plenty of fruit to help stave off cravings, keep healthy and provide them with something delicious to focus on instead. You'll be lessening your colleagues chance of cancer, serious illness and also, less people outside smoking means more people inside being productive - and it means you can shut that door leading to the smoking area (a win-win for when it starts to get cold!)

So, if you're the office manager, PA, receptionist or just a hungry employee that reckons your office would benefit from eating more fruit, you can place your order right now at fruitfortheoffice.co.uk

We offer Fresh boxes, packed full of a selection of our favourite fruits that come in all different sizes to accomodate the smallest or biggest of offices.

Or, we also provide tailor made boxes so you can pick whichever fruit your office fancies in any quantity you need!

Which Fruit is Safe for Dogs, Cats and Other Pets?

Photo Credit: jespahjoy via Compfight cc

Got a pair of puppy/kitten/other adorable animal eyes staring at you whenever you eat?
Wish you could share the office fruit that you snuck to your house with your four-legged friend?
It's difficult sometimes knowing what you can feed your pets especially when all manner of delicious human food is already off-limits (I mean, how are dogs so happy all the time even though they can't eat chocolate?)
So we've broke it down for you so that any leftovers - a rarity, we know! - from your office fruit delivery can feed your pet happy and not cause a case of projectile pet puking. (What a waste of delicious fruit.)

Dogs

Anyone that owns a dog knows that the real challenge is not getting them to start eating new things, it's stopping them from eating everything and anything in sight - even things that can make them sick.

So here's a list of fruits that it's safe for your pup to fill up on, followed by fruit that you need to keep well out of reach of their paws - and most importantly - their mouth!

Yes

  • Apples - without seeds or core as these contain poisonous chemical compounds
  • Blueberries
  • Strawberries
  • Raspberries
  • Blackberries
  • Watermelon - without rind or seeds
  • Frozen pieces of banana
  • Cantaloupe melon - without rind or seeds
  • Honeydew melon - without rind or seeds

No

  • Lemon
  • Lime
  • Grapefruit
  • Orange
  • Apricots
  • Plums
  • Grapes
  • Raisins
  • Cherries

Cats

Felines are much pickier eaters and for good reasons - they lack many of the receptors for sweetness and are natural carnivores so plant matter isn't easily digested in their sensitive system. So, don't be offended if they don't scoff up the office fruit delivery in a manner similar to yourself on a Monday morning. Instead, be sure to introduce any new fruits in small portions and monitor any changes in their digestion (We know hanging round the litter tray isn't really the best way to spend your Friday night)

Yes

  • Frozen banana
  • Watermelon - without rind or seeds
  • Cantaloupe melon - without rind or seeds
  • Honeydew melon - without rind or seeds
No

  • Lime
  • Lemon
  • Grapefruit
  • Orange
  • Apricots
  • Plums
  • Grapes
  • Raisins
  • Cherries

Rabbits and Other Furries

The most common image is of a rabbit chomping on a carrot but they're partial to a fruit salad too! But, remember, bunnies, guinea pigs and other small, fluffy pets love sugary fruit a little too much so be sure to limit them to around two tablespoons a day otherwise it can easily cause digestive problems.

Yes

  • Apples - without seeds or core as these contain poisonous chemical compounds
  • Banana
  • Blackberries - and their leaves
  • Cherries - not the pits or any other part of the plant as they contain highly poisonous cyanide
  • Grapes
  • Kiwi
  • Mango
  • Melon
  • Nectarines - remove the pit
  • Papaya
  • Peaches - remove the pit
  • Pears - without seeds
  • Pineapple
  • Plums - remove the pit
  • Raspberries - and the leaves
  • Strawberries - and the leaves
  • Tomatoes - WITHOUT the leaves
No

There's very little fruit that rabbits can eat but too much sugar found in fruit can easily cause illness.

Introduce fruit one at a time, in small portions and monitor your pet for any dental symptoms such as:

- Going off their food
- Weight Loss
- Drooling
- Wet Chin
- Discharge from the eye
- Messy bottom

Be sure to tweet us @office_fruit to ask us about any other fruit your pet can eat and be sure to visit www.fruitfortheoffice.co.uk to order your regular office fruit delivery or even a beautiful fruit basket to share with your furry friend (or keep all to yourself!)

A Day in the Life of... Office Manager @ FFTO

Sometimes it feels weird to be ordering (or thinking of ordering) from a company and not knowing anything about them. I mean, do the employees have Casual Friday, do they prefer tea or coffee, are they fruit ordering robots or people...?

So, we felt the best way to let you get to know our family-owned office fruit delivery company a bit better was by asking employees what they do on an average day - whether it's at our admin office in Greater London or at our fruit packing warehouse in Central London.

Callie, our office manager, works at our Essex office and spends her day doing every job under the sun - from making sure that office fruit orders are taken, to dealing with customer queries and even running the social media! So here's her (busy!) day in the life:

What is your title at work?

Office manager

What gets you out of bed in the morning for work? (A song, a pet, amazing food, looking forward to something at work?)

Generally knowing that there is so much to be done at the office. The phone starts ringing before the office opens at 09:00am so I have to be prompt when arriving!

What do you eat for breakfast and do you have it at home or work?

I prefer not to eat first thing in the morning as I’m normally rushing around (oops) so it’s usually a banana on the way to work, or when I arrive a nice cup of tea and some berries.

Do you get made and dressed up for work or does it depend on what’s happening that day?

We’re quite causal here at FFTO so unless I have meetings or we’re heading out after work it’s jeans and a tee!

How do you get into work?

We’re a local family run business so many of us travel in by car.

What do you do as soon as you get into work?

Kettle on, and answer the phone meanwhile. Normally crack a joke with accounts that start MEGA early, to start the day off right.

You’ve turned on your computer, what’s the first thing you do?

We get a lot of enquiries about our services so I like to get back to those emails straight away! We communicate with our night time staff via email so I like to check that all deliveries are going out okay and if I need to contact any of our drivers or clients first thing.

Any meetings you have to attend?

At present we’re interviewing for a few positions in the office, so it’s great meeting so many new people who are so interested in what we’re doing here. Lovely to get great feedback from individuals who may not have heard of the unique service we offer! Sometimes I attend new client meets to reassure our customers we’re regular ol’ humans organising their fruit deliveries, and that we know our stuff ;)

It’s time for elevenses, what do you grab for?

An apple! Fitting in the new scheme of 7-a-day means that I’m eating so much fruit, so regularly!

What work do you need to get done today?

I’m currently rearranging our office to accustom for the new starters. We’re growing so quickly we need new desks! I'm usually pestering our Directors about something, and it's great working for a small company in that they're so heavily involved and available. Today I need to ask our Head Buyer, Tom, if we can add a few new products to the website!

Is there much office banter or is it normally just rounds of tea, biscuits and pleasantries?

The tea flows all day, one of us is usually making! We’re all ladies here so it’s pretty polite… most of the time. We do have a hula hoop for a mad half hour; which tends to happen quite regularly when our nutty director, Lesley, is in the office!

Lunch at the desk or lunch out?

Lunch out! Working in a small office means that you never escape the ring of the telephone. A nice brisk walk helps refresh the brain, especially in the current sunshine!

Do you have fruit in your office & do you find it improves staff health & productivity?

Yes! We prefer chopped fruit packs as it can take time to prepare when you're busy, although everybody gets excited in the summer when we have melon or pineapple to cut up. We eat a lot of fruit here as we have to lead by example! We do have treats in the office, but when you’re constantly talking about fruit it does make you crave a banana or an apple.

We hope you enjoyed finding out more about Fruit for the Office and what goes on behind that delicious box of fruit you get delivered to your office.

If you want to see more of these 'A Day in the Life of...' blogs, tweet us @office_fruit or leave a comment down below to let us know.

And, as always, give us a ring or an email if you're interested in an office fruit delivery or fruit gift basket in the London area and you might even get a response from the office manager herself - you lucky thing!

How to Raise Morale in the Office

Photo Credit: CountYourBle$sings (college. Instagram: ldufffff) via Compfight cc

Work. The word alone is boring enough, let alone the 9 to 5 daily grind.

But we hear you cry from behind your desks: "Fruit for the Office HQ, how is your office so happy?!" Well, it's mainly because we eat so much fruit and it keeps us fit, healthy and super hot (some of us think so anyway!) but it's also because of these reasons:

Wake up Early!

There’s nothing worse than JUST making it to work on time and being flustered (and sometimes not wearing matching shoes!) It just sets you up for a bad day, especially if you’re late. So get your outfit set out the night before, get that alarm clock set and give yourself time to eat a good breakfast and commute without all the stress of being on time!

Get Active!

Sports days don't have to end with school! (But the bad haircuts do...) As the weather gets warmer, get outside and have a fun day of classroom classics such as egg and spoon, 5-a-side and tug of war. Stick an entry fee on the event and you can raise money for charity! Just be sure that you're refuelling with orange slices, bananas and plenty of water!

Smile!

There’s truth in the words: “Smile and the whole world smiles with you” Almost everyone you smile at, from the barista on your morning coffee run to the person who offers you the seat they had their eye on, will smile back, causing you to smile again too! The smile chain will continue all day, guaranteed!

Dress Up!

Dress for success has never been more true than when you’re at work. If you dress up in a way that makes you feel both comfortable and powerful, then you’re ready to go for the day and the self-confidence will be oozing out of you! So take that gorgeous power outfit out of the back of the wardrobe and get going!

Dress Down!

Have a Casual Friday at work, even if it's just a terrible tie day or if you go all out and have a fancy dress theme! Not only will it make everyone feel a lot more comfortable with each other and get colleagues talking but if you charge an 'entry fee' you can fundraise for a charity of your choice: the ultimate feel good Friday!

Lists!
Make a schedule, a list, a to-do – whatever you prefer – that’ll get you in gear for the day. There’s nothing more helpful than a list of things to do – and when you’re going to do them – you’ll not only stay on task but you’ll know your tasks!

Treats!
Everyone loves a snack and preparing an afternoon treat for your work mates will be sure to put smiles on everyone's faces! (except Gary in accounting - cheer up, Gary!) It doesn't have to be a lot of work, especially as summer is approaching and everyone is working on those hot summer bods, so skip the cake mix and use the fresh fruit from your office fruit delivery to make delicious fruit kebabs! Those multi-coloured, natural energy boosters are guaranteed to beat the 3pm slump.

Take Pride in Your Work!
No matter what you do, whether it’s clinching a sale or making the best tea, be proud of it! Self-confidence breeds happiness so never take yourself for granted, you're awesome at what you do – so own it!

Persevere!
If you’ve been a bit mopey, depressed or even unprofessional up to now, it’s going to be hard to change in just one day! But keep at it and remember, it’s not a new you, it’s an improved you!

Tweet us @office_fruit and let us know what you've been doing in your office to stay happy, motivated and boost morale for you and your colleagues!

#EasterFruitFriday - UNICEF @ Brighton Marathon 2014

Set in the equally picturesque and alternative beach town of Brighton, the pavements were pounded by the worn-out and blistered but proud feet of Brighton Marathon 2014 runners.

For 2014, Fruit For the Office were given the amazing opportunity to support UNICEF and all those who run miles and miles, giving it their all, to run marathons on behalf of UNICEF.

Fruit for the Office donated huge boxes of our favourite, energy replenishing fruits to UNICEF and their marathon runners at Brighton Marathon - which, we assume after 26.2 miles, were scoffed down pretty sharpish!

Our bananas are famous (and also very photogenic!)

At Brighton Marathon, UNICEF set up a right royal spread of delicious banana donations and Fruit for the Office couldn't be happier to have donated our office fruit to such a worthwhile charity.

If you were running at Brighton Marathon on behalf of UNICEF, check your goody bags and you'll find a 50% off voucher code from Fruit For the Office - lucky you!

Well done to all those who ran and if you're running on behalf of UNICEF at another marathon this year, you might be chomping down on a bunch of our delicious bananas again!

Tweet us @office_fruit to find out if we'll be at a marathon near you soon, or leave a comment below if you were at Brighton Marathon 2014 and enjoyed the bananas donated by this office fruit supplier!

#BoozyFruitFriday – Alcoholic Fruit Cocktail

It’s that time of the week again. The weekend is drawing near and what better way to kick it off than with a Friday afternoon boozy office treat. This boozy fruit salad is a great way to end the week in the office and you’ll be getting one of your 5 a day too!

This recipe works with all fruit so just scoop up the remains of your office fruit delivery, chop it up and stick it in a bowl. Then all you need to do is make the boozy sugar syrup

What you need
  • Equal quantities of sugar and water
  • 50cl of an alcohol of your choice – something citrusy like cointreau or a lemon vodka will work best

Making the syrup

  • Take 1 part sugar and 1 part water and place in a microwaveable bowl
  • Cook on the highest heat for 2 minutes
  • Remove from the microwave and stir – the sugar should be completely dissolved, if you making quite a bit, you may need a little longer in the microwave.
  • WARNING: This solution will be extremely hot so be careful when handling
  • Leave to cool to room temperature then add your alcohol and stir.
  • Pour the syrup over the fruit and leave it to infuse for a few minutes
 Then you’re ready to serve!

Deliciously Digital - Fruit in Video Games

It's a Friday and it's natural to be staring at the clock, watching the minutes tick away until it hits 5pm and you can finally stick on your best outfit and hit the bars and the clubs all weekend long.

Or, if you're more like myself, you're looking forward to vegging out on the sofa for a weekend-long pig out session accompanied by your favourite video games. However, who said you had to pig out on greasy nosh? With all that fruit delivered by your favourite London-based office fruit company, I'm sure you're hoping the company ordered a little too much just so you can take a bit home with you.

However if, like most other companies, the office already chowed down on our delicious fruit then, fear not, because there's plenty of video game fruit to feast your eyes on this weekend...

  • Wumpa Fruit - Crash Bandicoot

Bringing back memories of everyone's favourite Playstation game, Crash Bandicoot shows how a little wumpa fruit - which looks suspiciously like our apples - goes a long way, giving you extra lives, powering you up and even letting you fire it out of a bazooka (not a recommended way to get your five-a-day)

  • Cherries - Pac-Man

Going way back and getting completely retro, Pac-Man knew how much fruit was going to help his cause and give him points and power - we can't say our cherries have the exact same powers but they are definitely tasty enough to test out.

  • Banana skins - Mario Kart
If you haven't played a Mario Kart game before then I fear for your fun levels. However, the use of fruit in this game is a lot more dangerous as banana skins are used to make your kart slip and slide and hopefully cause your opponents to lose the race. We hope you eat the bananas you order from us though rather than throwing them in front of oncoming traffic...

Office Snacking

 VS.

You may want to give this a read before you reach for the office biscuit tin……..

A new survey has revealed that some women are consuming a whopping 650 calories every day in office snacks alone.

VouchersCodes conducted a survey and discovered that 87% of women asked admitted to snacking unhealthy snacks at their desks. The top naughty treats were chocolate, biscuits and crisps.

Once the calories were totted up, it was revealed that over half of the women questioned (51%) were consuming between 650 and 750 calories in snacks alone. This amounts to around a 3rd of the daily recommended intake for a woman.

To make matters worse, most women claimed that it was boredom or being social that caused them to snack on sugary, fatty treats – not hunger.

Only 9% of women questioned were indulging in a reasonable amount of snacking, consuming 150 – 250 calories at their desks

By tucking in to your office fruit delivery and swerving the muffins, you can make sure that you are in that healthier 9%.

Fruit Gets Fashionable

In the fickle world of fashion, it seems that fruit has finally been given its moment to shine. This summer has seen the high street blossom with a variety of fruity prints blazoned across dresses, skirts, tops, and accessories. Carmen Miranda would be pleased!

But don’t be fooled into thinking that this trend is just for the ladies, the men are getting involved too. Check out these uber cool fruity booties!

Even if you may not be a fan of fruity fashion, think of it like this. What better way is there to remind you to grab a piece of fruit from your office fruit box than having it all over your t-shirt or dangling from your ears?

Fruit Hydration

The verdict on how much water we should be drinking has been u-turned so many times I don’t think any of us actually have a clue anymore.

First squash and tea didn’t count, then they did, then tap water was great, but we were told never to refill our plastic bottles. We’ve been told that water can fix every ailment from headaches to bad skin – but drink too much, and it could kill you.

Over at Fruit HQ, like most of the nation we were left totally confused.com; however there was a saving grace that came from working in the fruit industry. Fruit is very high in water content. In fact fruits are made up of mostly water so as you’re getting one of your 5 a day you’re actually keeping yourself hydrated too. Take a look at how much water is packed into one of our FRESH boxes

Fruit

% Water Content

Banana

76%

Green/Red Apple

84%

Pear

86%

Satsuma

86%

Nectarine

87%

Peach

89%

So if you’re sitting at your desk trying to work out whether 6 pints is the same as 2.5 litres (it’s not by the way) just reach for a peach!

National Cherry Day

National Cherry Day is upon us. On the 16th July we are all urged to go out and eat as many British cherries as possible. So in celebration of this day we’ve put together some fun cherry facts!

  • Wild cherries contain a very small amount of cyanide, not enough to do you any harm, but enough to remind us that they are not push overs!
  • Cherries are a symbol of fertility!
  • Cherry blossom trees – part of the cherry family are considered to be extremely lucky in Japan
  • Cherries have a very short harvesting season, in the UK they are usually out in July only.
  • Cherries really do come in pairs – how cute!
  • Cherry coke was the first fruity variation of the popular drink. This was followed by lime, orange and raspberry however the cherry variety still remains the favourite.
  • Cherries are natural laxative – so you may not want to eat too many this weekend!
If you know any cherry facts that I've missed (I'm sure there are loads) then leave a comment to let me know.

LimeLight

Over at Fruit HQ we heard about this nifty thing called the iPhone 5 Experiment. A plucky young man called Rob from Coventry has decided to camp outside the Apple Store in Covent Garden for as long as possible whilst waiting to purchase an iPhone 5. The only catch is that he can not spend a penny, so will be relying on hand outs from companies and the general public for EVERYTHING. Oh yeah, he's also on a mission to make his stay as luxurious as possible so I'm guessing they'll be no standard sleeping bag and tent for this man. I'm expecting to see blow up beds, electric blankets and barbecues.

As we’re also based in Covent Garden, we couldn’t bear the thought of someone on our patch begin fruitless. So we’ve pledged to help him out by dropping off some of our expertly picked fruit. So if you're in Covent Garden around September time, look out for him - you never know, he might even split a banana with you!

Good luck Rob!

Cheats Guide to Getting 5 a Day

We all know we should be eating 5 portions of fruit and veg a day but it can be pretty difficult at times. That’s why we’ve put together this cheats guide to getting your 5 a day. Following some of these tips will make it not only easier, but also much more fun to source and consume some fruit and veg.

Fruit Juice – This little trick is old news, but so effective. Just one 150ml glass of fresh juice a day counts to one of your 5 a day.

Beans on Toast – This meal time favourite actually counts towards your 5 a day, as do any other type of pulses (beans and lentils).

Frozen Grapes – These beauties make tasty alternatives to ice cubes for your summer drinks. They’re also a brilliant low calorie snack and have even been hailed as the dieters answer to ice-cream!

Pasta Sauce – That quick fix dinner of pasta could be better for you than you think. A good pasta sauce that is low in salt can count as one of your 5 a day.

Fondue it – Cheese or chocolate, whatever you fancy. Before you know it you’ll have eaten a bumper portion of fruit or veg (and cheese or chocolate too, but you can’t be good all of the time!).

Happy 4th July!

Now we know the 4th of July is an American celebration, but over at Fruit HQ we’ve never been ones to turn down the opportunity to have a party – especially an office party. So if you feel your colleagues could do with livening up this Monday morning, why not present them with this 4th July spread!

To Munch

PB&J - You can’t get more American than a peanut butter and jelly sandwich (that’s jam to me and you). Leave the brown bread at the door and get stuck into a soft loaf of white. Slap a layer of jam on one slice, a load of peanut butter on the other, and you’re good to go.

FRUIT FLAG - As much as we’d like to, we can’t claim this one as an original idea, but when we saw it we feel in love. You’ll need to route through your office fruit and find some strawberries, bananas and blueberries or blackberries for this culinary masterpiece

For the full recipe and step by step instructions visit http://familyfun.go.com/recipes/fruit-flag-686767/

To Slurp

Fusion cuisine is all the rage nowadays, so to show there are no hard feelings, the perfect thing to serve with an all American dish on Independence Day is a Great British classic - PIMMS!

A perfect start to the week we think!
