If you find you often have leftover fruit in your office at the end of the week, and it's not taken by employees, you could contact one of the below charities who might be able to take the produce off your hands.

UK Harvest collect food from a variety of places, from restaurants and fruit & veg markets to ordinary businesses. You can arrange for immediate collections of produce and it is distributed to charities across the UK.

If you are able to take your leftover produce to a local food bank or supermarket, check with Trussell Trust, as you may be able to donate food to go to the local community.

If you are interested in composting, take a look at Get Composting to see if this is something you can get involved with in the office.

There are also great apps like OLIO, and Too Good To Go where you can share your food. On OLIO you can share food that's close to expiration or food you're just not going to eat, and with Too Good To Go restaurants and stores can distribute food that is still good, but would otherwise be thrown out.

What is it?

A Granny Smith is a crisp, crunchy, bright green apple. Often it will have wax on the skin as a protectant, which gives the apple a beautiful shine.

Where does its name come from?

They are named after the first grower of the fruit, Maria Smith.

Where's it from?

They started life as French crab apples from Tasmania, but were first grown in Australia in 1868. Maria Smith threw out these French crab apples, which then took root and grew into what we now know as Granny Smith trees.

When is it in season?

They are generally available all year round, as they are grown around the world. They are grown in places like Australia, New Zealand, Europe, South America and the US.

What does it taste like?

They have a juicy, tart, sweet taste. This strong flavour makes them great both raw, in desserts, cider or salads. They have a high acid content which means they don't lose their shape once cooked, and they're great in salads as they are slow to oxidise (or turn brown) once cut.

What are the health benefits?

They are rich in antioxidents, and low calorie. A typical apple has 70 calories, and 17 grams of carbohydrates, which is lower than most other apples. They also contain lots of fibre, which is vital for a healthy diet.

Did you know?

They were first promoted by the New South Wales Government in 1895 as a good export apple as they are a hardy apple, which means they can be stored for long periods.

Unless you've been hiding under a rock, you have probably heard about Wellness. It's a concept that is being brought into many spheres of our live, and people are using this as a focus of life-style changes. Read on to find out about Wellness, and how this can be translated into everyday working life...

So what is Wellness?

It's making the conscious effort to practise healthy habits daily, to improve your physical and mental health, to help you get more out of your life. YOLO! Luckily you can make a big impact by making even small changes, and taking it slow.

Social connections

Connecting with other people is crucial for wellness, as socialising makes us feel connected to others, and to the world. Spending 10 minutes a day catching up with a friend or loved one is a goal that is easy to fit into your busy day.

How can I do this at work? Take some time away from your desk to chat to someone, maybe it's at the kettle, or at the lunch table, and focus on talking to them and what they are saying rather than worrying about that to-do list. You'll find yourself refreshed and ready to take on a new task.

Exercise

If you can't (or don't want to!) fit in an intense gym session or run every day, even by doing 20 or 30 minutes of gentle exercise can help.

How can I do this at work? Take a brisk walk on your lunch break, or use the stairs rather than the lift.

Nutrition

Adopting a more healthy diet, including fruits and vegetables, and less processed foods, will work wonders not just for your body, but for your mental well being too! Feel proud of yourself for fueling your body in the right way.

How can I do this at work? Take advantage of your office fruit box, and why not try packing veggies as snacks too? Sliced peppers and cherry tomatoes are a great snack without the sugar.

Sleep

Getting a good night's sleep is crucial to keep your mind and body healthy. Have a look at your sleep routine, and see if you need to make any changes. Limit your caffeine after 12pm, incorporate relaxing activities before bed (there are many yoga routines on YouTube to help you get into a relaxed state of mind), and try getting up at the same time every day,

How can I do this at work? It's very tempting to grab coffee after coffee when at work (what else is going to get you through that meeting?), but if you need the drink try decaff coffee - it will give you the same flavour and feeling, but without the stimulant that might keep you awake later.

Mindfulness

Practising mindfulness helps your focus and mood, and can help to reduce stress and anxiety, which is good for both the body and mind. By focusing on what you are currently feeling or thinking, you can get to the root of how you react to certain situations, and help you work through adjusting your behaviours. Try an app like Calm or Headspace for mindfulness meditation, or jump on the adult colouring book trend and get creative while tapping into your consciousness.

How can I do this at work? Sometimes we can find ourselves in very stressful situations at work, and it can be hard to find a way through them. The Calm app has a specific section for Emergency calm, so if you need it, why not grab some headphones, sit in a quiet place where you won't be disturbed (we have been known to go to the toilet for solitude!) and listen to the track. If it's not an emergency situation, why not focus your mind while at your task, and try to ignore any outside noise. You will find the tasks get done a lot quicker.

Find out what fruits you can share with your pets!

When feeding fruit to your furry friends, you have to bear in mind that it should be done in moderation as fruit contains more sugar than vegetables. If your pet is overweight fruit should be limited, and smaller animals (like rabbits) should only be fed up to 2 tablespoons of fruit per day. Make sure all fruit is washed and remove any rind, inedible skins, seeds and pits. Having said all that, there are still plenty of benefits to feeding fruit to your pets, so let's find out which fruits are safe!

Fruit has more sugar than vegetables, so should be limited to overweight pets. make sure all fruit is washed and remove rind, inedible skins, seeds and pits.

Apples

Good for? Overweight pets, and senior pets with a low metabolism. Can be eaten by cats, dogs and rabbits
Contain? They are high in fibre and low in fat. They contain Vitamin A and C which are essential for healthy bones and tissue
Don't forget! You need to remove the core and seeds as they contain cyanide

Apricots

Good for? Cats, dogs and rabbits
Contain? They are full of potassium and beta-carotene.
Don't forget! Don't give them the stems or leaves, the stems are poisonous

Bananas

Good for? Cats, dogs and rabbits
Contain? They contain potassium which can support heart and kidney functions. They are high in carbohydrates and sugar so should be given to dogs sparingly.
Don't forget! Slice the banana into reasonable slices

Blackberries & Blueberries

Good for? Cats, dogs and rabbits
Contain? They contain antioxidants, fibre and vitamin c

Cantaloupe

Good for? Cats and dogs
Contain? They contain Vitamins A, B and C, which can help alleviate inflammatory tissues
Don't forget! The skin can carry harmful bacteria, so remove this and the seeds. Cut the melon into manageable wedges before feeding

Cranberries

Good for? Cats and dogs
Contain? They contain Vitamin C, fibre and manganese, and they can help fight UTIs!
Don't forget! They can be served raw, cooked or dried, but not as a juice or sauce as they contain too much sugar and can upset your pet's stomach

Mangoes

Good for? Cats, dogs and rabbits
Contain? They have lots of vitamins
Don't forget! You need to remove the hard middle pit as it contains cyanide. You also need to remove the skin, and serve it in small amounts as it could otherwise cause an upset stomach

Oranges

Good for? Dogs will like them, but cats will probably not be interested (author note: when I get an orange out my cats run away!)
Contain? They have lots of nutrients like Vitamin C, that can help a pet's immune system and flush out toxins
Don't forget! You need to remove the seeds, peel, leaves and stem - your dog can only eat the fleshy part of the fruit

Pears

Good for? Cats and dogs
Contain? They contain Vitamin A and C, and fibre
Don't forget! Feed them in moderation, and remove any seeds

Pineapple

Good for? Cats, dogs and rabbits
Contain? They contain lots of vitamins, and minerals such as folate and zinc, which can help your pet's digestion and immune system
Don't forget! As they contain a lot of sugar they are best served in small quantities. Remove the spiky skin and hard core

Raspberries

Good for? They are good for cats, dogs and rabbits, but only in small doses!
Contain? They contain lots of fibre and Vitamin C, and are low in sugar. They have anti-inflammatory properties which makes them great for older pets
Don't forget! They contain small amounts of naturally occurring sweetener called xylitol, which can be fatal if ingested in large amounts

Strawberries

Good for? Cats, dogs and rabbits
Contain? They contain lots of nutrients which help strengthen your pet's immune system, and slow age-related issues
Don't forget! They can be served fresh or frozen, and raw or pureed over their normal food

Watermelon

Good for? Cats and dogs
Contain? They are almost 92% water, so they are great for hydration. They contain Vitamin A, C and B-6, as well as potassium which helps maintain healthy muscle and nerve function
But how can you ensure you are successful with making these changes? You can guarantee success by setting great goals, and here's how you do that...

1. Make big goals

If you're making the effort to make a change, make the goal a big one. While it may seem intimidating, by setting a big goal you may not always get to the goal itself, but you will be in a much better position for trying! As they say, if you shoot for the moon, you'll land somewhere among the stars.

2. Break them down into chunks

One way to make a big goal look less intimidating is to break it down into chunks, including daily to-do lists which get you one stop closer to that goal. By taking it in smaller pieces, you can set mini-goals, and hitting these mini-goals will keep you motivated throughout the process.

3. Commit yourself

Don't go into it half-hearted, as you know deep down you will not achieve the goal, and feel even worse. If you're going to set a goal, commit yourself to making the changes needed. If you don't feel like you can commit, maybe you're not ready to make the change, and that's OK! Maybe give yourself some more time so you feel completely in the zone.

4. Reward yourself

We mentioned mini-goals above, and with hitting any goal, big or small, rewarding yourself is key. We don't recommend rewarding yourself with the thing you're avoiding (for example, if trying to lose weight, to reward a pound loss with chocolate), but having a reward will keep you motivated and happy in the process. Even if it's taking a long leisurely walk in your favourite park, or treating yourself to a face mask, there's loads of ways to reward yourself without hindering your progress.

5. Learn from past failures

If there's a particular goal that you go for every year, but fail every time, have a really good look at why you're failing. Is it your environment, the people around you, or is it actually you that are preventing yourself from meeting your goal? You may need to tweak the goal in some way to make it practical, and feasible, for you to hit it. By setting unreasonable goals every year, you only make things harder for yourself.

6. Be thankful for what you can achieve

Don't worry about perfection, just remember why you are making the change. No one out there can do things right 100% of the time, so if you find yourself getting frustrated with yourself, just be grateful that you are able to make the change that you are, and remember that not everyone has the inner strength to attempt the same thing as you.
Plums are a staple fruit and are hugely popular, so let's find out all about it!

What is it?

A plum is an oval fleshy fruit, which is reddish, purple or yellow, with a flat stone inside, which makes it a member of the stone fruit family.

Where is it from?

Plums are grown on every continent apart from Antarctica, but China is the world's leading producer of plums!

Where does the name come from?

The name plum comes from the Old English word "plume".

What are the different colours of plum?

The skin can be red, yellow or purple (black), and the inside flesh can be red or yellow.

When is it in season?

As they are grown around the world, they are always in season somewhere!

What are the health benefits?

They are low in calories, and fats, and are an excellent source of Vitamin C. They can help control blood sugar as they have a low glycemic index. They also contain potassium.

Did you know?

A dried plum is called a prune! Prunes are often eaten as an aid to digestion.
My name's Rachel, and I'm the Head of Admin & Marketing - the beauty of a small team is you get to wear many hats! So what does my typical day look like?

9am

I get in and start my day by reading through my emails, either from our Dispatch Unit overnight, or from any eager customers wanting to adjust their orders. I enjoy a lovely (decaf!) coffee, and settle in.

10am

As my job is so varied my main tasks for the day can be quite different, but usually I'll be helping the admin team with orders or queries; answering customer emails; or getting down to some marketing tasks! I usually grab a banana or a pink lady apple around this time too.

12pm

I'll usually write a blog (as I am now!) or other content, I find this time of day the best for being creative. If we're recruiting (which we are at the moment!), I'll use this time to contact candidates and arrange interviews.

1:30pm

Lunchtime! I usually spend mine with a homemade chicken and salad wrap, and a good book :)

2:30pm

Back to work! I reply to any emails sent over while I was on my lunch, and get back into the rhythm.

3pm

This is my favourite time of the day, as the main part of the day is over, but there's still enough time to get some productive work in! I'll usually take a look at our social media, or start planning blog posts or other projects. If I'm flagging I'll usually grab have some nuts or dried fruit to keep me going until dinner.

5pm

One of my lovely colleagues will finalise all our orders and reports, and then it's home time! Another successful day done.

Read on to find out...

What is vomit fruit?

Vomit fruit is a fruit that is native to southeast Asia and Australasia. It is part of the coffee family, and its proper name is Morinda citrifolia.

It is also called great morinda, Indian mulberry, noni, beach mulberry, cheese fruit, dog dumpling and starvation fruit.

Where does the name "vomit fruit" come from?

It has a particularly strong smell and taste. It is said to taste like "rotten cheese", although the taste changes as the fruit ripens. When unripe it is said to be "spicy and grassy, with hints of horseradish and parmesan". When ripe, it tastes likes "sharp cheese, lemon and vomit". It is so bad that it is claimed that in Polynesia, shamans use the fruit to ward off evil spirits.

It has such a strong smell that it is recommended not to eat the fruit on its own.

What is it?

Nectarines are a type of peach, and are part of the Rosacae family. They are a type of stone fruit. Their skin colour can vary from red, orange and yellow, and they have a pit (or stone) inside. Their flesh can be yellow or white. They are round, and look very close to a peach. There are over 100 varieties of nectarine.

Where is it from?

It most likely originated in China more than 2000 years ago, and were cultivated in ancient Persia, Greece and Rome. They are now grown in California, the Mediterranean, South Africa, China and Australia.

Where does its name come from?

The name nectarine comes from a literary adjective from the early 17th century, nectarine, which means "sweet as nectar", or "nectar of the Gods".

How can I tell between a nectarine and a peach?

Nectarines resemble peaches in their colour, size, and the shape of the pit, but there's a very easy way to tell between them at first glance - peaches have a fuzzy skin, whereas nectarines are smooth.

When is it in season?

They are at their best in Summer between late April and late August, but they are available from Chile from December to March

What are the health benefits?

Nectarines provide vitamin A and C, as well as Vitamin E, K, B1, B2 and B3. They contain calcium, potassium, magnesium, iron, zinc and copper. They are low in calories, but have 5 calories more than a peach.

Did you know?

They are NOT a cross between a peach and a plum, they are a type of peach.
So let's find out which fruits are in season for Autumn!

Apples

Apples are always popular, but Autumn is when they really shine! Make sure you've got some in your fruit box, we love Pink Ladies and Braeburn apples!

Figs

Figs are delicious, and full of fibre and nutrients. They're not everyone's favourite, but why not give them a go?

Lemons & Limes

These are great to add to hot drinks, and a top benefit is they give you that extra boost of Vitamin C you need to avoid those pesky Autumn and Winter sniffles!

Plums

As you may notice, this is the time of year when peaches and nectarines become available, and we add plums in their place.

Orange

These are a bit trickier to eat than easy-peel citrus like satsumas, but they are definitely worth it - that tangy taste cannot be beaten! It also gives you lots of Vitamin C, like lemons and limes

Pomegranates

These fruits are not as popular as you need to cut them open to get the delicious seeds, but don't miss out on them! They are truly scrumptious if you give them a chance!

Our fruit bags

The bags that our fruit comes in have two sides, a plastic side and a paper side. To recycle these, you can split the bags in half, and recycle both sides in the corresponding recycling.

Please note you can also request no bags if this is your preference. Just let our admin team know, and we will do our best to ensure the bags are not included. However, the bags are included to prevent any bruising of fruit in transit, so please bear this mind.

Boxes

There are two options to recycle our boxes:

1. You can leave the boxes out for our drivers to collect when they make their next delivery to you. As long as the box is in the same condition as it was delivered in (that is, not flattened down) we can reuse the box.

2. If you do not want to hang onto your box until your next delivery, you can flatten the box and include it in your regular cardboard recycling.

Boxes for nuts, dried fruit and chopped fruit

If you receive our large boxes of nuts or dried fruit, or even our chopped fruit, you will probably receive them in plastic boxes. These can be put in your usual plastic recycling.

Baskets

If you order one of our fruit baskets, your fruit will be delivered in a wicker basket. While we do not collect these, and they cannot be recycled, they do make lovely displays or even gifts. So if you do receive a basket, why not make someone else's day a bit more special by gifting them a basket, or even just display your fruit in the office to make it even more enticing!
What can you do to make use of them? We've got some ideas for you!

Apple cider

Cider is a surprisingly easy thing to make! The great thing is you can choose any apple you like, they just give a different flavour!

All you need to do is wash, and core the apples, and then make them into a puree by using a blender or food processor. Then, spread some cheesecloth over a container, and pour the pulp into the cloth. The juice will filter through the cloth, and make sure to give it a good squeeze so all the juice comes out! You can store it in the fridge in a container with an airtight lid for up to 7 days. Brilliant!

Apple vodka

Making apple-infused vodka is super simple. Pour vodka into a clean jar or bottle, and cut up the apples. Put the apple pieces into the vodka, and leave to infuse - this can be done for as long as you like, but we would recommend between 12 hours to a week. Once done, remove the apple pieces, and enjoy your your apple-flavoured vodka!

Apple face mask

Turn your uneaten apples into a soothing face mask. The great thing is you can mix together a variety of different things to make your perfect mask! Why not try mashing up some apples, and adding honey, and maybe some oats, to turn it into a scrub?

August is also the American Peach Month, so you're reading this right on time!

What is it?

Peaches are stone fruit, which means they have a stone, or pit in the middle. The outside skin will have a small variety of colours, from deep red to a light yellow. Peaches can have either yellow or white flesh inside. They can be round, or flat.

How can you tell the difference between a peach and a nectarine?

A peach has slightly "fuzzy" skin, while a nectarine is smooth.

Where's it from?

Peaches started in China, as early as 6000BC! It later moved to Japan.

China is still the largest producer of peaches, but they are also grown in Spain, Italy, Greece, and the US.

When is it season?

Peach season goes from the beginning of May, until late September, but the peak Peach season is in July and August.

What does it taste like?

White fleshed peaches will be very sweet, with no acidity, whereas yellow fleshed peaches will be sweet with an acidic tang.

What are the health benefits?

Peaches are full of dietary fibre to help aid digestion, and only contain 58 calories for a medium one, so a nice tasty treat, without loads of calories! Peaches may also help with allergy symptoms, as it works as a natural antihistamine.

Did you know?

There are over 700 varieties of peaches!

You may even find yourself getting ill more often. What can you do to keep yourself healthy while on a business trip? Read on to find out...

Keep hydrated

Hydration is key to keeping your mind and body healthy. After all, your body is 60% water! Drinking plenty of water helps everything from your brain, to your muscles, even to your digestion. Try for between 1.5l to 2l a day. If you struggle to get in your water intake, try using a reusable bottle that you can take with you, especially if you have meetings or events to attend. There are also plenty of apps on your phone that will remind you when you next need to take a drink!

Eat fruit and veg for vitamins

Eating well while you're travelling is essential, although we know it's so easy to just grab convenience food when you're on the go! Although the recommendation is now 7 portions of fruit and veg a day, when you're travelling or in meetings constantly, take it easy and try to get 2-3 portions. Every little helps! Why not grab some fruit out your office fruit box before you leave?

Get some rest!

With varying schedules, and sometimes long days of travel, sleep can be the one thing that evades you, but it can be the one thing that stops you from becoming ill. Sleep boosts your immune system, and resets you for the next day. Make sure you have some time to wind down before getting into bed, and try your best to get 7 hours in bed before you have to be up. But if you can't sleep, don't stress, as this will make you feel worse. Just being in bed relaxing, even if you're not asleep, can be just as good as getting a deep sleep. This leads us onto our next point...

Limit caffeine

It's always tempting to guzzle down coffee or energy drinks for that caffeine kick to keep you going on long days of meetings, events, or travelling. But caffeine is not always your friend; and can prevent you from properly unwinding and sleeping later in the day. Caffeine can also trigger anxiety and stress, so is not always useful in stressful situations. If you can't function without caffeine, we recommend limiting it to before lunchtime only.
So what can you do to beat procrastination at work, to ensure you're making the most out of your work hours? Read on to find out...

Organisation
Being organised is key to procrastination; if you know what you've got to do, you're less likely to put it off! It's a good idea to have a diary, or a notepad, where you can write down the tasks for each day. Some people like to manually tick or cross out a task as it's been done. If you don't get on with paper, and would prefer an online-based something, we find Evernote or Trello to be great ways of keeping track of tasks and projects.

Prioritisation
Putting your tasks into order of how important or urgent they are can do wonders for breaking that mental block. Try the Eisenhower Box to help with this:

Tackle the big or hard things first
Most people's minds are more active in the morning, so try to tackle the big or hard tasks in the morning. Once you have those out the way, you'll feel more accomplished, and the smaller tasks will be easier to finish.

Don't feel like you've wasted the day
You may find that if you don't get much done in the morning, that you've wasted the day, and find it hard to then get going. If you get out of this mindset, you can make the most of the remaining hours and plough on with tasks. You don't have to be productive every second of the working day to get things accomplished, so try to not be too hard on yourself if you struggle.

Go over what you've completed at the end of the day
You may find that it's motivational to make a list at the end of the day of what you've managed to get done that day. Sometimes we do tiny tasks that feel like nothing, but they add up to a lot of work. So why not try noting down what you've done, as you may have been more productive that you realise!
So we thought, what about those old-school influencers, those people who discovered different fruits and made them so popular they are now sitting in fruit bowls around the world? We decided to find out.

Avocados

The avocado, which is now a staple of many people's diet, has been in the Mecican diet for almost 10,000 years, having originated in central Mexico. The first Europeans to eat avocados were Spanish explorers, who travelled to Central and South America in the 16th century. They called them "aguacate", which they took from the Mexican name, "ahuacatl". By this time, avocados had spread from Mexican into parts of South America. The Spanish then brought avocados to Europe and sold them to other countries.

Who is the Influencer in this story? Well, there's a couple; Sir Hans Sloane, an Irish naturalist, is beliueved to be the person who coined the word "avocado" in 1696. Then we have Henry Perrine, a horticulturalist, who first planted avocados in Florida in 1833. They didn't become a corporate crop until the 1950's, when people started putting them in salads.

Pink Crisp apples

Pink Crisp (or otherwise known as it's brand name, Pink Lady) is a delicious apple which is a cross between a Golden Delicious, and a Lady Williams. Who was the influencer who made this delicious apple? It was John Cripps, an Australian plant- breeder who had the ingenious idea to cross these two fruits in 1973, creating an apple which is one of our most popular apples!

Satsuma

We believe the satsuma may have originated in China, but it was first reported in Japan more than 700 years ago where it is the major cultivar grown. The Influencer in this case? The wife of a United States minister to Japan, General Van Valkenberg, is believed to have coined the name "satasuma", and the General sent tres home in 1878 from Satsuma, the name of a former province (now Kagoshima Prefecture), on the southern tip of Kyushu island.

Pears

The Williams Pear is one of our most eaten pears, but where did it come from?
The Williams pear is thought to date from 1765 to 1770,from an English schoolmaster called Mr. John Stair. A nurseryman, our Influencer in this case, later acquired the variety, and after he introduced it to the rest of England, it became known as the Williams pear, as per his last name. The pear's full name is William's Bon Chretien, or "Williams' Good Christian". It is known in the US as the Barlett pear.
However, a mug is not just a mug - we all have that one mug that we like drinking out of, and some of us have been known to get a little *possessive*! So, what does your favourite mug say about you?

The Travel Mug
If you're a busy bee who is always on the move, going to meetings in different locations or working from different offices, your go-to mug may well be a travel mug. If this is you, you're most likely someone who can't sit still, and love the opportunity to jump your of your chair and head to somewhere new!

The Novelty Mug
If you love a novelty mug, we bet you're cheeky and love to make a joke out of things. You may even be a practical joker (are you Jim from The Office?)

The Company Branded Mug
If you prefer to stick to a company branded mug, you're probably someone who loves your job, and more importantly, loves the company you work at. You live and breathe your company.

The HUGE Mug
There's always someone in the office that just NEEDS a huge mug of coffee in the morning to get them going. Or in the afternoon as a pick me up....if you're that person, you're probably someone who doesn't do things by halves, and probably, doesn't get enough sleep!
