Which Fruit is Safe for Dogs, Cats and Other Pets?

Got a pair of puppy/kitten/other adorable animal eyes staring at you whenever you eat?
Wish you could share the office fruit that you snuck to your house with your four-legged friend?
It's difficult sometimes knowing what you can feed your pets especially when all manner of delicious human food is already off-limits (I mean, how are dogs so happy all the time even though they can't eat chocolate?)
So we've broke it down for you so that any leftovers - a rarity, we know! - from your office fruit delivery can feed your pet happy and not cause a case of projectile pet puking. (What a waste of delicious fruit.)

Dogs

Anyone that owns a dog knows that the real challenge is not getting them to start eating new things, it's stopping them from eating everything and anything in sight - even things that can make them sick.

So here's a list of fruits that it's safe for your pup to fill up on, followed by fruit that you need to keep well out of reach of their paws - and most importantly - their mouth!

Yes

  • Apples - without seeds or core as these contain poisonous chemical compounds
  • Blueberries
  • Strawberries
  • Raspberries
  • Blackberries
  • Watermelon - without rind or seeds
  • Frozen pieces of banana
  • Cantaloupe melon - without rind or seeds
  • Honeydew melon - without rind or seeds

No

  • Lemon
  • Lime
  • Grapefruit
  • Orange
  • Apricots
  • Plums
  • Grapes
  • Raisins
  • Cherries

Cats

Felines are much pickier eaters and for good reasons - they lack many of the receptors for sweetness and are natural carnivores so plant matter isn't easily digested in their sensitive system. So, don't be offended if they don't scoff up the office fruit delivery in a manner similar to yourself on a Monday morning. Instead, be sure to introduce any new fruits in small portions and monitor any changes in their digestion (We know hanging round the litter tray isn't really the best way to spend your Friday night)

  • Frozen banana
  • Watermelon - without rind or seeds
  • Cantaloupe melon - without rind or seeds
  • Honeydew melon - without rind or seeds
No

  • Orange
  • Apricots
  • Plums
  • Grapes
  • Raisins

Rabbits and Other Furries

The most common image is of a rabbit chomping on a carrot but they're partial to a fruit salad too! But, remember, bunnies, guinea pigs and other small, fluffy pets love sugary fruit a little too much so be sure to limit them to around two tablespoons a day otherwise it can easily cause digestive problems.

Yes

  • Apples - without seeds or core as these contain poisonous chemical compounds

No

There's very little fruit that rabbits can eat but too much sugar found in fruit can easily cause illness.

Introduce fruit one at a time, in small portions and monitor your pet for any dental symptoms such as:

- Going off their food
- Weight Loss
- Drooling
- Wet Chin
- Discharge from the eye
- Messy bottom
