They’ve
been referred to as the ‘nectar of the gods’ and ‘natures’ sweets.’ We get it, fruits
are sweet. However when it comes to the 3pm office slump just as many of us are
craving savoury snacks as well as sweet. But hold your horses - that doesn’t mean you need to
reach for the nearest packet of crisps. You can still get one of your 5 a day by
transforming your office fruit delivery into one of these savoury snacks
Melon and Feta
Take some chopped
watermelon and sprinkle some crumbled feta cheese on top. To turn this into more of a
salad you can add chopped black olives, slices of red onion and drizzle with
olive oil.
Apple and Cheese
This
classic combination works best with a sweet apple and a sharp cheddar cheese. Just
take a slice of apple, a slice of cheese, pop into your mouth and munch!
Tomato and peach salad
Take some
tomatoes, peaches and red onion. Slice them up, place in a bowl then season
with salt, pepper and olive oil. Hey presto, a fruity savoury salad snack.
Strawberries, Vinegar and Black
Pepper
The vinegar
and black pepper in this recipe actually work to bring out the sweetness in the
fruit. However the heat from the black pepper will give you a savoury kick to
the snack.
- Take a cup of slices strawberries and place in a bowl
- Drizzle with 1tbsp of balsamic vinegar
- Season with fresh black pepper
- Allow this to rest for 5 minutes so the flavours can infuse
Beef sandwich with a crushed
blackberry spread
This recipe
will require to spent a little more time in the office kitchen – but it really
is worth it. You’ll need some cold steak slices – preferable from the night
before or you can buy a pack of precooked beef slices from your nearest
supermarket. You’ll also need a handful of blackberries, some honey and some crusty
bread or crackers – what ever you prefer.
- Crush the blackberries in a bowl with the back of a fork
- Add some honey (to taste) and stir in.
- Spread the mixture onto you bread or crackers
- Top with the beef, then munch away!
And if none
of these strike your fancy, you can always add some carrot or celery sticks to
your fruit delivery!
