5 of the World’s Weirdest Fruits

We're always on the lookout for weird and wacky fruits. Whether they've got a name that sounds more like a disease, happen to look like a weapon rather than something you'd eat or are virtually unknown to majority of us, we just can't help finding out about them. So here are 5 of the weirdest fruits we came across!



The Kiwano
This yellow fruit has a spiky exterior which is probably why it has been given the nicknames of the Horned Melon and the African Horned Cucumber. It is native to the Kalahari Desert located in Africa and its taste is described as a blend of cucumber, kiwi, banana and lemon.  

Physalis

A physalis is almost like a gooseberry that grows inside a long papery husk and it surprisingly shares a relation to the tomato. Similarly it has a refreshing acidic taste to the tomato and can be used in many of the same ways such as in salads. Physalis fruit is native to the Americas, so most of it is imported from South America.  







Cherimoya
Grown across the world, cherimoya’s sweet/sour taste has been described as a mix of banana, pineapple and strawberry. The black seeds found inside are poisonous when crushed and its bark, when injected, can induce paralysis! It might have a unique flavour but it sounds to us as if it is more trouble than its worth!  






Synsepalum Dulcificum
One thing is for sure – its name is a bit of a mouthful. This unique fruit is also known as Miracle Fruit which is a whole lot easier to say for a start. So you’re wondering why Miracle Fruit? Well for starters it has the magical ability to make sour foods taste sweet. If you have one of the small red berries before tasting a lemon - for example - then you will find that your lemon tastes sweet rather than sour. Magic right?  




 
Custard Apple
The custard apple is also known as the ‘bull’s heart’ and is widely used for its medicinal benefits as much as its sweet taste. Its leaves can be used to make stains or dyes and the fruit itself and the bark can be used for healing purposes. It is said that the fruit originated in the West Indies but it is commonly grown throughout the Americas.
